Goal streak sharpens Ronaldo focus

Cristiano Ronaldo said he hoped his scoring streak would run and run after he struck the goal that took Manchester United FC past Olympique Lyonnais and into the last eight of the UEFA Champions League.

'Important goals'
Ronaldo's close-range finish four minutes before half-time earned United a 1-0 victory over Lyon – and 2-1 aggregate triumph – and also elevated him to the top of the tournament's scoring chart with six goals from seven games along with FC Barcelona's Lionel Messi. The Portugal winger, who now has 30 for the season in all competitions, said: "At the moment I feel very good, I am scoring important goals and I hope it continues like this. My team-mates have helped me a lot and the most important thing is we are winning games. I've not really thought about it, but to be the top scorer is wonderful."

'Performance not the best'
Ronaldo admitted that United were not at their best against a Lyon side who came close to an equaliser when Kader Keita struck a post in the second half. "The most important thing was to get into the next round. We didn't play so well in the second half but we deserved to win because in the first half we created many chances. In the second we also created a few chances, but the performance was not the best. Sometimes you play badly but you win."

Good chance
United are through to their seventh UEFA Champions League quarter-final under Sir Alex Ferguson yet only once have they won the tournament in its modern format. Ronaldo sees no reason why they cannot go all the way this time, however. "Why not?" said the 23-year-old. "I think we have a good chance but we can't get carried away because the other teams are strong as well. Everyone wants to win the Champions League – it is the biggest competition and if you win it, it is great – but we are in three competitions and we are really focused on winning all of them. It is going to be tough now. There are big teams in there but we have a very strong squad and a good spirit in the team."
